Dr. McKinney, when did you begin using Musical Massage Sound Therapy?
The greatly improved method in the field of music for therapeutic purposes was presented in Florida in 1989 by intuitive Al Miner with guidance from Lama Sing, who is similar to Edgar Cayce. The sound therapy was specifically designed to balance the energies of our human energy field. The method was first used for hospice work and soon after was found to be beneficial for all kinds of spiritual, emotional, mental and physical needs.
Dr. McKinney, what did the instructions say?
The instructions gave us a description of the sound patterns and suggestions for instrumentation. This information needed to be realized in the form of audiotapes and CDs. My twin sister, Dr. Dorothy Gundling, and I developed the recordings. Since then, we have turned our attention to producing the highest quality recordings possible and marketing them as part of our mission to assist in the healing of humankind.
Does your twin sister have a similar background as you?
Yes. She is also a musician. Her degrees are from Stanford University, Pacific Union College and Saybrook Institute. She is a professional violinist and was concertmaster for the Napa Valley Symphony for many years. In the late '50s and early '60s, she organized and was past president for both the Napa Valley Symphony Association and Napa Valley Symphony League. Interestingly, she began her career in music for healing at about the same time as I did. She started by volunteering at local hospitals and nursing homes in the Bay Area where she lives. Even though many miles separate us, time and distance are never a problem. She was an integral part of Casa de Maria Research Center since its inception. We complement each other in all that we do.
What was the initial question that brought about the instructions?
Initially, it was my aim to use music to help people going through a crisis or help in their transition (their dying process). Thus, three musical variations were suggested. It was soon discovered, however, that the variations were good for all. Reports from listeners started coming in describing their increased feelings of joy, hope, creativity, inner peace, and so on. We began to realize that their feelings exactly matched the psychological attributes found in each of the chakras or energy centers. The Musical Massage Sound Therapy variations had helped them return to balance and harmony. The therapeutic sounds created ease where there was dis-ease. With a balanced, resonating field, the body was better able to make itself more perfect: spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically.
What have you discovered since those initial days?
We have discovered a wealth of information. The tonal patterns are derived from the ancient sacred Gregorian chant that has high healing qualities. We also learned that Musical Massage Sound Therapy is a key that unlocks the doorway to perfect balance. Through its resonance and overtones, it generates a sympathetic resonance that begins the healing process throughout the body.
Who gets the most benefit from the recordings?
Everyone can benefit from the recordings, but those people who are most aware of the changes taking place in their own human energy field while they listen to the recording will better understand the value. Practitioners of massage, Reiki, acupuncture and similar life energy disciplines find Musical Massage Sound Therapy to be a valuable boost to their healing treatments. Yet others find it effective to supplement the listening with dance, art, toning, or color therapy. Children, who are difficult to manage, do benefit greatly by listening to Musical Massage Sound Therapy.

Dr. McKinney, can you describe your Attunement Room?
In our Attunement Room, Casa de Maria Research Center offered therapeutic treatments using music and color. The room was circular, 10 feet in diameter and located within a larger room. It was surrounded by a six-foot high white-silk curtain, with a white hand-made rug on the floor. Two small hand-woven symbols hung on the curtain of this room: one an equal cross in a circle; the other a star-of-David, crafted by Judith Lowe. The client could either lay down on the massage table or sit in a chair placed in the middle of the room. The music and colored light was selected intuitively for each client.
Dr. McKinney, can you give us a description of your Center?
From 1983 to1995, Casa de Maria Center was a complex of rooms to accommodate music-therapy clients, special speakers, workshops, and it provided counseling rooms for many practitioners of the healing arts. The Casa de Maria Bookstore was part of the Center, which sold books, crystals, selected recordings and essential oils. In 1995 the bookstore was sold and Casa de Maria Research Center continued as a separate entity focusing on distributing Musical Massage Sound Therapy.
