In 1974 a small group of people interested in the therapeutic value of music and color, began collecting and working with information concerning this subject in 1974. With the help of this group Dr. Maria McKinney founded the organization and Casa de Maria Research Center was incorporated in the State of Washington in November 1982 to actively develop this discipline and make it available to all people who seek the healing it offers. In 1984, The Internal Revenue Service recognized Casa de Maria Research Center as exempt from Federal Income Tax under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Current Board Members are Susan Moore, Executive Director, Dr. Maria McKinney, Judith Lowe, Mary Polk, Christina Moore and Elana Wave.

Mission
The mission of the Casa de Maria Research Center is to explore, promote and practice the life enhancing concepts of music, light and sound, to assist in the healing of humankind, and to help raise its consciousness.

Attunement Room  Beginning in 1983, Casa de Maria Research Center offered therapeutic treatments using both music and colored lights.  The room was circular, 10 feet in diameter and located within a larger room. It was surrounded by a six-foot high white-silk curtain, with a  white hand-made rug on the floor.  Two small hand-woven symbols hung on the curtain of this room: one an equal cross in a circle; the other a star-of-David, crafted by Judith Lowe.  The client could either lay down on the  massage table or sit in a chair placed in the middle of the room. Classical music and colored light was selected intuitively for each client. Once the Musical Massage Sound Therapy was composed and available in 1989, this replaced the need for customizing the music selections for each client.  Much of Maria's knowledge of classical music for particular therapeutic purposes is described in the book, Healing Tones of Music, available on the order page.
Dr. Maria McKinney, founder of Casa de Maria Research Center has degrees from Mannes College, Yale University, Stanford University, and her PhD in Music from the University of Oregon. She is a professional cellist and also plays viola da gamba, which she learned in Basel, Switzerland. She left a position as Professor of Music at Central Washington University to devote her full-time energies to the work of the Center.

From 1983 to1995, Casa de Maria Research Center operated a bookstore with a therapy room (attunement room) and a classroom to accommodate music-therapy clients, special speakers, workshops, and  it provided counseling rooms for many practitioners of the healing arts. The bookstore sold books, crystals, selected recordings and essential oils. In 1995 the bookstore was sold and Casa de Maria Research Center continues today as a separate entity focusing on distributing Musical Massage Sound Therapy, and researching light and sound therapy.
